SterlingShield WS

Column:Silver Protective Agent

Introduction

SterlingShield WS is a water base solution which provides excellent protection for silver / silver alloy and gold / gold alloy surfaces. Coating with SterlingShield WS dramatically improves tarnish resistance, anti-sulfide ability, and wear resistance of the metal surfaces.

Properties

● An ultra-thin protective film is formed after the workpieces are immersed in the SterlingShield WS solution at 50ºC for 0.5 to 5 minutes.
● The protective film improves tarnish and wear resistance, while causing no negative effects on contact resistance or solderability.
● Short-term heat treatment of 200ºC will not affect the protective properties of the ultra-thin film.
● Workpieces will not have water stains after SterlingShield WS treatment.
● SterlingShield WS has a long bath life.

Composition of Plating Solution

SterlingShield WS is simply dissolved in heated water (50ºC). The solution is then ready to be used.

Solution Maintainance

DI water can be added to compensate for the lost volume due to water evaporation. The reactive compound concentration needs to be maintained in 100%. Please see the “SterlingShield WS Working Solution Maintenance and Addition” section for further details.

Solution Preparation

Note: Before using SterlingShield WS, its container must be shaken thoroughly to ensure uniformity of the product.
1. Thoroughly clean the work tank.
2. Add 75% volume DI water and elevate the temperature to 50 to 55ºC.
3. Add SterlingShield WS, and stir to form a homogeneous solution.
4. Add water to the desired level, and stir the working solution for at least 1 minute.
5. Adjust the working temperature to 50 to 55ºC

Note: Due to the working solution being a gel solution, the particle size affects the analysis results greatly. This method is not very accurate for analyzing an aged working bath.
1. Procedure:
a) Put 20mL of the SterlingShield WS working solution into a 250mL V flask
b) Add 20mL 0.1N Iodine
c) Stir for 10 minutes
d) Use 0.1N NaS2O3 to titrate to light yellow
e) Add 1mL of 1% starch indicator
f) Continue to use 0.1N NaS2O3 to titrate to colorless (record the total V)
2. Calculation: SterlingShield WS %= 400 - 20V

Troubleshooting

Issue

Causes

Solutions

Water stains are present

Poor cleaning of workpieces

Ensure all parts are clean before applying SterlingShield WS.

Water rinse bath is contaminated

Use warm water or clean better.

Workpieces cannot pass K2S 5% testing

Incorrect SterlingShield WS concentration

Adjust the SterlingShield WS concentration to 100%.

Incorrect temperature

Adjust the temperature to 50ºC.

Insufficient immersion time

Increase the immersion time.

Rinse water temperature is over 30

Decrease the rinse water temperature to 30.
